DPU

Go Back

Definition

An acronym for Defects per Unit. It is calculated as the total number of Defects identified on all inspected Units divided by the total number of Units inspected.

Note that this definition assumes each unit has more than one defect opportunity and we count the number of Defects, not Defectives.

Examples

A random sample of 1000 widgets is inspected and the number of Defects is found to be 70. Then DPU = 70/1000 = 0.07. In plain English, there are 0.07 Defects per unit in the inspected sample.
