Value Added

Definition

Useful activities/features in a process that a customer will pay for. Value Added activities are ones that give the product/process a competitive advantage by making it more innovative or revenue-enhancing.

When an initiative is launched to improve cycle time or simplify the process, it often makes sense to create a flow chart of the process and identify the value added and non-value added activities. This allows the team to visually separate out the steps that are critical to the product or that the customer cares about, from the activities that essentially constitute waste.
