Pugh Matrix

Go Back

Definition

Used to prioritize a list of options. A list of weighted criteria is established and then each option is evaluated against those criteria. Also called decision matrix, prioritization matrix and solution matrix.

Application

A great advantage of this tool is that it allows comparisons of alternative concepts/solutions against the same set of criteria or needs, rather than simply listing the pros and cons of each individual concept by itself. This allows the designers to create a ‘whole-picture’ view of the intended uses of the product/service along with how well each of the proposed ideas addresses them.
