Kamishibai (board)

Definition

As part of the Toyota production system, kamishibai boards are used as a visual control for performing audits within a manufacturing process. The kamishibai board formalizes, prioritizes and schedules the checks to be made on the gemba.

It works like this: a series of cards are placed on a board. Cards are then selected at random or according to schedule by supervisors and managers of the area. After the inspector performs the check, the card is turned over and returned.

The kamishibai board ensures that the safety, cleanliness, and Lean systems in the workplace are maintained and that quality checks are performed in a non-predictable manner.
